India, Nov 04: Transparency in medicine pricing is emerging as an important issue in India's healthcare sector, particularly as patients continue to manage rising and recurring healthcare expenses. Recent regulatory directions on pharmacy disclosures have brought renewed attention to the gap between medicine procurement costs and the prices charged to consumers, highlighting the need for greater price visibility and informed purchasing decisions.
The directions require specified hospital pharmacies to disclose medicine procurement and selling prices, including Price to Retail and Price to Consumer. The move addresses concerns that substantial discounts extended to certain hospital pharmacies were not necessarily being passed on to patients, reinforcing the importance of transparency in medicine pricing.
For patients managing chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiac ailments, medicine costs represent a recurring financial commitment. Greater price awareness, alongside access to affordable alternatives, can help consumers make informed choices and manage their healthcare expenses without compromising access to essential medication.
Commenting on the development, Generic Remedy, a unit of First RemedyPharmacies Private Limited, an affordable-medicine pharmacy franchise network, highlights the role of quality generic medicines in making healthcare more accessible. With a portfolio of over 1,000 products, the brand focuses on affordable medicines and wellness products across chronic-care, OTC, supplements and cosmetics categories.
Rajesh Kumar, Chief Executive Officer, First Remedy Pharmacies Private Limited, said,
"Medicine affordability is not just a pricing issue; it directly affects a patient's ability to continue treatment. Greater transparency can help consumers understand medicine costs and make informed purchasing decisions. At the same time, access to quality medicines at affordable prices remains essential, particularly for those managing long-term health conditions. Quality generic medicines can play an important role in reducing the financial burden of treatment."
